2020 North Carolina City Tax Tag List
UPDATED FEBRUARY 12, 2020
This is a list of known locations that have had "tax tags" issued in accordance with the NC General Statutes. Nearly all of these tags are manufactured by the NC Prison Industries although most all of the tags before the 1940s were made by other manufacturers. This list DOES NOT include booster license plates. Information is based on what I have seen and have pictures of. Anyone who wants to submit pictures of their plates is more than welcome. I will be updating this at least monthly. Because there are so many pictures, it is impossible to show all of these plates. On another page, I will be showing an example of the styles and types of tax tags issued.
LOCATION- City, town, village or fire district where tags were issued
CONFIRMED - Blank with no years indicates the location has not been verified and I have no picture of the tag as of yet. If you can supply a picture, please send it to me!
Y shows that I have seen this plate but have yet to acquire a picture
R shows that Richard Fawcett has the information on this plate.
LOW YR - Earliest year I have a picture of
HIGH YR - Newest year I have a picture of
CYCLE - Indicates that location supplied tags for motorcycles
FIRE - Indicates plates were supplied for firemen, fire departments, or fire districts.
RESCUE - Indicates plates were supplied to rescue squads, EMTs, etc. by the location
OFFICIAL - indicates plates were made available for city officials (mayor, police chief, commissioner, etc.).
4H - Indicates counties that issued plates for 4H members
TAXI - Indicates plates were supplied for Taxi cabs for that location.
An asterisk (*) indicates that NC state records show plates started earlier than this date. Charlotte is showing as 1901 and Fayetteville is showing 1893 labeled for 1 or 2 drays for hire.
