North Carolina City Tax Tags
North Carolina cities and towns started using "tax tags" the latter part of the 1800s as an alternative to toll fees in order to pay for road and highway maintenance. Over the years, there have been between 500 to 600 cities, towns and communities that have issued these plates at one time or another. At least 2 suppliers of these "tax tags" are known- J.S. Beverly & Co. from Oxford, NC and the NC Prison Industries (now called Corrections Enterprises). Click on the buttons to view more information on these suppliers.

Current City Tax Tag Types (2013 & later)
The plant is also available to produce city, fire and rescue squad tags for fire departments and municipalities. Styles A through C are standard embossed plates measuring 4" x 12". Each plate is individually sleeved in wax envelopes, and packaged 100 to a box.
Style A

Style A: is a standard city plate, with an embossed town name, with or without a service die. Year dates, and numbers are available if requested.
Note: Red and Green lettering is available. If not specified, Red in odd numbered calendar years and Green in even numbered calendar years will be used. |

Style B: is a standard city plate with an embossed town name, town slogan, year dates and numbers are available if requested.

Style C: is a standard rescue squad or fire plate with an embossed town name, a service die, year dates and numbers are available if requested.
